How to keep up with ever-changing social media algorithms

Social media algorithms… *aka every social media manager’s nightmare*

Businesses often give up when trying to understand algorithms because they can be different on every platform. (I know, it can be challenging!) Algorithms exist to regulate suitable content for the audience. Consider the number of people present in that crowd, all needing to be entertained. Honestly, as a consumer, the algorithm is trying to help you by showing content you want to see or engage with. Being on the other end of that and being the one trying to have your content seen, doesn’t feel so helpful.

Want to stay updated on social media algorithms? Here are our top tips to stay ahead in the game.

Google Alerts:

Do you ever ask Google for updates on algorithms? You can use Google Alerts to stay updated. Just pick relevant keywords for your niche, industry, and social media platforms you're interested in. Google Alerts will notify you when new articles, blogs, or news stories related to your request are published. Make sure to research the updates and use any new changes, tips, or tricks in your social media strategy. Google has always had our backs in business from the start!

Do you have any other texts or sentences that you would like me to provide an easier-to-read version for? Instagram constantly shares helpful tips and hacks on their account to maximize your posts there. It seems a simple way to keep up, but an easy one to forget about. Most companies have their official blogs. For example, there's the Facebook Newsroom and the Instagram Business Blog. This is where we'll look for the latest news and updates - get the information straight from the source.

Analytics:

Maybe you just need to understand what's working and what's not with your posts. Are your readers viewing your content but not interacting with it? Do you know which posts get the most views and engagement for you? The Facebook Business Suite and Instagram app provide valuable insights about your social media presence, but many people fail to utilize or ignore this information. Utilise this data to note which specific content of yours is being engaged with, and post more content like this. See what doesn’t work and try to steer away from that. While the algorithm is an important piece to the puzzle, it’s not the entire solution. The way you use it is equally as important.

Encourage Engagement:

Algorithms work in mysterious ways - this, we know. Algorithms always prefer accounts with high engagement. We know this because it's consistent with the data. A like, comment, share or even a safe can help the algorithm decide how engaging your content is. With this in mind, try and encourage interactions on your content. You could ask questions in your post, prompting the audience to comment. Even if you don't share something publicly, it still matters to the algorithm. Share educational and informative content that's worth saving.

Community Groups & Newsletters:

This might sound boring, but it can be the most informative and effective tip. Check out Facebook or LinkedIn groups that are all about social media communication, marketing, or tips and tricks to improve your social media skills. When people share their advice, it's a great way to learn from others. You can also share your own experiences, ask for feedback, and receive support. While it won't be your main guide for hacking algorithms, you may still find valuable lessons from others.
